OFF. Matthew Smith
Limoncello gallery in London presents the second solo show in the gallery by the British artist Matthew Smith. The title of the exhibition is OFF: an invitation to “turn off the volume”, to enable thinking, artistic making, looking. It is like an interruption in the sound and visual continuum that surrounds us. The most recent works by the artist are objects at the boundary between plane and volume. They invite us to identify clear, simple images and to enjoy the inner pleasure of the act of vision. At the same time, by the relationship they have with space and the other works, they open further potentialities: the huge fingers pointing upwards and downwards appear as the columns of an imaginary expanding space. read more »
Il Turco lussurioso — Voglio vivere così
Il Turco Lussurioso is the title of Patrizio Di Massimo’s solo show curated by Alessandro Rabottini and hosted by Villa Medici in Rome in the context of the exhibition project Teatro delle esposizioni #3. It recalls the anonymous novel The Lustful Turk, published in England in 1828: this text is an example of popular literature showing the presence of several cultural stereotypes associated with colonialism and with the distorted perception of Middle East civilizations. The exhibited works – paintings and drawings conceived as the elements of a uniform exhibition project – investigate the themes of body and sexuality, by developing a narrative which is independend from punctual references to the literary source. read more »
