Spazio di Luce (Space of Light)

Giuseppe Penone is the artist invited by the Whitechapel Gallery in London in occasion of the annual Bloomberg Commission. The artist’s work consists of site-specific installation titled Spazio di Luce (Space of Light) (2012) consisting of the bronze cast of a twelve meters tree, whose trunk is divided into sections, so as to allow visitors to walk it through. Obtained by the technique of lost wax, the interior of the cast presents a precious gold leaf layer, while the exterior shows the fingerprints of those who made it. The work confirms the evolution of the artist’s research, interested in the relationship between man and natural environment: it is presented together with a previous work entitled Essere Fiume (Being River) (1998) as well as with archive material (writings, photographs and sketches), exhibited in a series of displays. The exhibition is accompanied by an annual program of events and meetings.

Until August 2013.
