The solo show by Iris Touliatou at DUVE Berlin revolves around the mysterious figure of Stephen Kane, introduced for the first time by the artist in POP QUIZ, the project conceived for the pages of cura. #12. According to the connections described by Iris Touliatou, the figure of Stephan Kane is built on that of Stephen Dedalus, James Joyce’s literary alter ego and protagonist of the novel The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. The Greek artist says she bought a copy of Joyce’s Ulysses with autograph notes by Stephan Kane and she uses this character to examine her work.
Collages, prints and objects that recall the shape of a screen are on show: made of different materials – from glass to concrete, from steel to wood – they work simultaneously as an instrument for the mise-en-scène and as a filter, put on the border line between opposing concepts such as those of existence and absence, internal and external, tangible and intangible.
Until December 15.
